Researchers stated individuals should visit a physician if they sleep longer than nine hours
‘It is increasingly regarded as a significant lifestyle behaviour that can impact cardiovascular disease (CVD) and death,’ the group of global researchers wrote.
Sleeping too much, more than six to eight hours a day, increases the risk of cardiovascular disease and premature death, a study led by the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences found.
Compared to people who slept six to eight hours, those who slept a total of eight to nine hours every day had a five percent increased risk.
‘For physicians, including questions about the duration of sleep and daytime naps at the clinical histories of the patients could be helpful in identifying individuals at high risk of heart and blood vessel issues or death.’
People who slept more than eight hours had a higher risk of dying or developing disorders of the heart or blood vessels in the brain compared to those who slept between six and eight hours.

But less than six hours also raises your risk by 9 per cent, the study demonstrated
‘On the other hand, if you sleep too much frequently, say over nine hours a day, then you might want to visit a physician to verify your overall health.
And people sleeping between nine and 10 hours a day had an increased probability of 17 and those sleeping more than 10 hours each day carried a 41 percent greater risk of cardiovascular disease or death.
The researchers also discovered a nine per cent increased risk for those that slept a total of six or less hours, but this finding wasn’t statistically significant.

‘Sleep is essential to human health, and individuals spend about a third of their hours sleeping.
‘Our study indicates that the optimal length of projected sleep is six to eight hours per day for adults,’ said lead author Chuangshi Wang, a PhD student at McMaster and Peking Union Medical College, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, China.
